The Advent Log is by far our family’s favorite Christmas tradition. Over 20 years ago the pastors of our church invited us over for their Advent Log time and gave us our log. This is simply a log from wherever you can find one with 1/2 holes drilled along the top for candles. In return, we have given a lot of these away as Christmas gifts to families who have admired ours. We start December 1 (although some people start on Advent Sunday) and light one new candle each night (different colored candles represent Sundays and Christmas day) alternating sides of the log until the last candle is lit on Christmas day.
First, Dave reads out of an Advent devotional Christ In Christmas A Family Advent Celebration, then we sing carols (starting with the youngest child) each person picking their choice for the day, (some years I play guitar some years I don’t) and our time ends in prayer.
Christmas morning when all the relatives are over we sometimes are singing 25 Christmas Carols before the present opening begins! The children are allowed to open their stockings before the Advent Log time but we wait until the carols are sung and Luke 2 is read before we open gifts.
Breakfast is usually sausage balls, Quiche, cinnamon rolls, peach flip, Christmas cookies, fruit and cheese, eggnog, hot chocolate, and cider.
